The Story
for Krista
“Selah”
*
From a long walk across a
Fallow field for 40 years. —
A coming home. — A Homecoming.
At that moment I put my hand on your bare belly —
That first night.
That first night where
Everyone we’ve ever known -
Whispered in our ears.
What was it about my hand
on your bare belly?
I was overwhelmed
by the beauty.
Full of clamoring,
It is a crowded room.
Drunk with love —
We think we love alone,
“I like that I can talk to
you about this kind of thing
*
“Be patient with me”
You said.
I heard a prayer in the silence of your kisses.
So I told you the S t o r y of us.
We danced for a while but I was impatient
clumsy and kept stepping
On your feet, so
You sat in silence for a long time -
Your mouth held shut by a small child
The color of turbulent seas.
*
Waves crash—
and Moon
White
Birds burst
into the sky— fly— away
Like dreams on waking
— like us—
Returning back to where we were before
— to rename ourselves
In a different story,
